Mumbai Resident Nabbed for Cyber Harassment Campaign

Law enforcement authorities have apprehended a 40-year-old man from Mumbai for allegedly conducting an extensive online harassment campaign against a woman from Delhi. The accused, identified as Chet Kamal Prakash, was taken into custody from his dormitory residence in Sahar Village, Andheri East, following a detailed digital investigation.

How the Harassment Unfolded

The case came to light when a woman residing in Palla Bakhtawarpur, located in the outer north region of Delhi, filed an official complaint. She reported that unidentified individuals had created multiple Instagram accounts using her identity without consent. These fraudulent profiles featured her personal photographs accompanied by defamatory captions and content.

The situation escalated when the victim received threatening phone calls from an unknown mobile number. The caller explicitly threatened to continue harassing both the woman and her family members. Particularly alarming was the threat to disrupt her upcoming marriage, which had been scheduled to occur in the near future.

Police Investigation and Technical Tracking

Following the complaint, police initiated a preliminary inquiry that led to the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) on November 16 under Section 66C of the Information Technology (IT) Act. The investigative team employed sophisticated technical surveillance methods to track the digital footprint of the perpetrator.

Officers meticulously analyzed call detail records from the mobile number provided by the complainant, along with subscriber information and IP logs associated with the two fake Instagram accounts. The investigation also extended to two Gmail IDs allegedly used in the harassment campaign.

DCP (Outer North) Hareshwar Swami stated that technical tracking consistently located the accused's digital activity in Mumbai. Investigators discovered that all fraudulent accounts had been created using the same mobile number mentioned in the victim's complaint.

Arrest and Evidence Recovery

The breakthrough came when police identified that the fake Instagram profiles had been created during October. A coordinated raid was conducted in Sahar, Mumbai's Andheri East area, resulting in Prakash's identification and subsequent arrest.

During the operation, law enforcement officials recovered crucial evidence including a mobile phone and a laptop from the accused. Both devices were operational at the time of recovery and have been sent for comprehensive forensic examination to extract additional evidence.

Police revealed that Prakash, originally from Jammu, was residing in a dormitory in Sahar Village at the time of his arrest. Investigators are currently examining the seized electronic devices to determine whether the accused operated additional fake accounts or targeted other individuals.

The ongoing digital evidence collection and data extraction processes aim to build a robust case against the accused while ensuring all aspects of the harassment campaign are thoroughly documented.
