In a case highlighting the risks of online holiday bookings, the Vanrai Police in Mumbai have apprehended a 25-year-old man for allegedly cheating multiple people through a villa rental scam. The accused, identified as Nishant, is charged with accepting substantial advance payments and then disappearing without providing the service or issuing refunds.
The Modus Operandi of the Villa Scam
The fraud came to light after a complainant, an employee of a private company in Goregaon, approached the police. The company had planned a two-day staff picnic and assigned him the task of booking accommodation. During an online search, he found an advertisement for a villa in the popular hill station of Lonavala, offered at a rent of Rs 1.5 lakh for two days.
Finding the rate suitable for the company's budget, the employee proceeded with the booking. The accused, Nishant, provided a bank account number for the transaction and even supplied a GST number to appear legitimate, building a false sense of security. The payment was made as instructed.
Booking Cancelled and Communication Lost
However, the deal quickly turned sour. The complainant was later informed that the booking had been cancelled because the villa was supposedly under renovation. Promises of a refund were made but never honored. To make matters worse, Nishant switched off his mobile phone, cutting off all contact with the victim.
Left with no other recourse, the company employee filed a formal complaint with the Vanrai Police. During their investigation, the police discovered that Nishant had similarly deceived other holiday goers using the same fraudulent scheme, indicating a pattern of criminal activity targeting online travelers.

Based on the evidence and complaint, the police successfully tracked down and arrested the accused. This case serves as a stark reminder for individuals and corporations alike to exercise extreme caution when making online transactions for travel and accommodation.
