Man Injured in Firing During Mediation Attempt in Amritsar; Five Individuals Booked
A man sustained serious injuries after being shot while attempting to mediate a dispute between two groups in the Daburji area, under the jurisdiction of the Maqboolpura police station in Amritsar. The incident occurred on Sunday night, leading to immediate police intervention and the registration of a case against five accused persons.
Details of the Incident and Victim Identification
The injured individual has been identified as Satnam Singh, a resident of Gehrimandi in Jandiala Guru. Following the shooting, he was promptly rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is currently undergoing medical treatment. Authorities have confirmed that the entire episode was captured on CCTV cameras installed in the vicinity, providing crucial evidence for the ongoing investigation.
Background of the Conflict and Police Involvement
According to police reports, the two groups involved had previously engaged in violent clashes, assaulting each other on two separate occasions. Both parties had filed formal complaints at the Jandiala Guru police station, and the matter was already under active investigation prior to this latest escalation.
Legal Action and Accused Persons
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Harpal Singh stated that after a preliminary investigation and based on the statement provided by Satnam Singh, a case has been registered under charges of attempt to murder and violations of the Arms Act. The accused include Gurjant Singh, Harman Singh, and Fateh Singh, all residents of Rampura, along with their unidentified accomplices.
Root Cause of the Dispute
Shamsher Singh, a relative of the victim, explained that the conflict originated from an altercation at a showroom. His brother, Lakhbir Singh, who works as a manager at Best Price in Manawala, had an argument with Gurjant Singh over the price of an item during a purchase. This led to Gurjant Singh and his associates allegedly intercepting and assaulting Lakhbir Singh on the road.
In retaliation, after Lakhbir's relatives returned from attending the Hola Mohalla festival in Sri Anandpur Sahib and learned about the assault, they allegedly stopped and beat up Gurjant Singh. Subsequently, both parties lodged complaints against each other and were frequently summoned to the Jandiala Guru police station for discussions.
Failed Mediation and Shooting Incident
In an effort to resolve the ongoing dispute, acquaintances from both sides arranged a meeting in the Daburji area on Sunday night. The intention was to settle the matter amicably and withdraw the filed complaints. However, the meeting quickly deteriorated into a heated argument instead of reaching a compromise.
During the confrontation, one of Gurjant Singh's associates allegedly pulled out a pistol and opened fire. The bullet struck Satnam Singh, who was present at the scene, causing him to collapse immediately. Following the shooting, the accused individuals fled the area, creating a sense of panic among local residents.
Police Response and Ongoing Investigation
Police teams swiftly arrived at the location after the incident. They seized the DVRs from nearby CCTV cameras to aid in the investigation process. Authorities have assured that a thorough probe is currently underway to gather more evidence and ensure justice is served in this case of violence and attempted murder.
