Tragic Suicide Pact in Mandya Village Linked to Marriage Pressure
A devastating incident unfolded in the quiet village of Dalavayi Kodihalli, located in Malavalli taluk of Mandya district, where a mother and her teenage daughter died by suicide on Sunday. The victims have been identified as 43-year-old Shakuntala, wife of M Mahesh, and her 19-year-old daughter, Priya.
Neighbor's Persistent Threats Trigger Family Crisis
According to police reports, the tragedy was allegedly precipitated by repeated threats from a local resident. The individual in question is a 35-year-old married neighbor named Muthuraju, who had been pressuring Priya to marry him despite his existing marital status and fatherhood of three children.
The family had consistently opposed this proposal, emphasizing that Muthuraju was already married and therefore an unsuitable match. Mahesh and Shakuntala had reportedly issued warnings to him, demanding that he stay away from their daughter and cease his advances.
Escalation Following Marriage Arrangements
The situation intensified dramatically when Muthuraju discovered that the family was making arrangements for Priya's marriage to another person. In response, he allegedly contacted Shakuntala by phone and issued severe threats, warning of dire consequences if they proceeded with the wedding plans.
Police stated that Shakuntala and Priya, overwhelmed by distress and fearing potential damage to their family's honor and safety, made the tragic decision to end their lives inside their home.
Police Investigation Underway
Mahesh has formally lodged a complaint with the Halaguru police station regarding the incident. Authorities have registered a case and launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the suicides and the alleged threats made by the neighbor.
This heartbreaking case highlights the severe consequences of harassment and external pressure on families, particularly in matters of marriage and personal safety. The community remains in shock as investigators work to uncover the full details of this preventable tragedy.
