Court Proceedings

Justice W Diengdoh presided over the hearing and stated, 'Heard Mr S Thapa, learned counsel for the respondent. Hearing is not concluded and will continue on the next date. As agreed by the parties, accordingly, list this matter for further hearing on 8th June, 2026.' This order was issued in the case of the State of Meghalaya versus Sonam Raghuvanshi.

The High Court had commenced hearing the defence counsel's arguments on June 4. Earlier, on Monday, the court had completed hearing arguments from the state government, represented by Advocate General A Kumar, who sought cancellation of the bail granted to Sonam.

Bail Grant and State's Objection

Sonam was granted conditional bail on April 27 by Additional Deputy Commissioner (Judicial) of Shillong, Dashalene R Kharbteng. The bail was granted citing procedural lapses during her arrest, specifically that she was not made aware of the correct section of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita under which she was held.

However, the state government maintained that the accused was duly informed by the police of the grounds of her arrest. To support this claim, the state submitted supporting documents in court on May 4, seeking revocation of the bail.

Background of the Case

The case involves the murder of Indore-based transport businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, who was killed near a waterfall at Sohra (Cherrapunji) in May 2025. According to the prosecution, a gang of four killers hired from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh carried out the murder, allegedly at the behest of his newly married wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, during what was purported to be their honeymoon trip.

The court will now continue hearing the defence arguments on the next scheduled date.
