Meghalaya Police Secure Leads in ISIS-K Threat Poster Case Targeting Garo Community

In a concerning development in Meghalaya, police authorities have confirmed obtaining significant leads following the appearance of a threatening poster attributed to the global terror organization ISIS-K in Tura, the district headquarters of West Garo Hills. The poster, which surfaced on Wednesday, specifically targeted the indigenous Garo community residing in the plain belt areas, demanding they vacate their lands immediately.

Police Investigation Underway with Confidential Leads

Superintendent of Police Abraham Sangma addressed reporters on Thursday, revealing that investigators have made progress in the case. "We have some leads but we cannot divulge them with you now, it will be done at an appropriate time," Sangma stated, emphasizing the sensitivity of the ongoing investigation. The poster, which has since been removed from public view, prompted immediate police action with a case registered at Araimile Police Station.

According to preliminary police assessments, this incident appears to be a calculated attempt by certain individuals or groups with vested interests to generate fear, anxiety, and disrupt the existing law-and-order situation in the region. The investigation aims to identify both those responsible for physically pasting the poster and those circulating its contents through various platforms to create panic and communal disharmony.

Government Assures Action Against Perpetrators

Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of home (police) Prestone Tynsong has provided assurances regarding government response to this serious security matter. "Let the government take necessary action but we will make sure that such thing should not happen," Tynsong declared, characterizing the incident as "very serious" in nature. The government has committed to pursuing all appropriate legal actions against those found responsible under relevant sections of law.

Police authorities have issued specific advisories to citizens in the wake of this incident:

  • Residents are urged not to panic or be misled by such threatening messages circulating on social media or other platforms
  • Citizens should immediately report any suspicious activity or information to the nearest police station, outpost, beat house, or the Police Control Room in Tura
  • The public is encouraged to maintain communal harmony and not engage in spreading unverified information

The police investigation continues with all-out efforts focused on tracing the origins of the poster and identifying the individuals behind what authorities believe may be an orchestrated attempt to destabilize the region's social fabric. As the probe progresses, authorities remain vigilant about maintaining peace and security in West Garo Hills district.
