Police in Bilaspur have arrested two mess workers for allegedly chasing a student with a knife at Guru Ghasidas Central University. The incident occurred on Monday at the Tantya Bhil Boys' Hostel and sparked widespread concern.
Violent Altercation Over Snacks
The trouble started around 6 pm when Harsh Agarwal, a third-year BTech student, made a simple request. He asked the mess staff to serve 'aloogunda', a popular potato snack, to another student. The workers, identified as Deepak Kewat and Dipendra Kewat, refused the request and began using abusive language.
The situation quickly turned violent. Both workers climbed onto the mess platform and chased Agarwal with a knife. The student managed to escape and reach his friends, but the accused continued to threaten his life.
CCTV Footage Goes Viral
The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed at the hostel. The footage has since surfaced on social media platforms, showing the frightening chase. This visual evidence helped police in their investigation.
Harsh Agarwal filed a formal complaint at the Koni police station on January 11. He described the terrifying experience in detail to the authorities.
Swift Police Action
Koni police officials acted quickly on the complaint. They arrested both accused within 24 hours of receiving the report. The two workers, aged 21 and 19, are residents of Karhi in Janjgir-Champa district.
"The police have recovered the knife used in the crime," a police spokesperson confirmed. "Both individuals have confessed to the act during interrogation and have been sent on remand."
University Response and Safety Concerns
The hostel mess is currently managed by a private firm. University authorities have not yet issued any formal statement regarding this violent incident. They remain silent about safety protocols or the status of the private firm's contract.
This incident raises serious questions about student safety on campus. Many are wondering how such violence could occur in a university setting. The lack of immediate response from university officials has added to the concerns.
Students and parents are demanding better security measures. They want assurance that such incidents will not happen again. The university administration faces pressure to address these safety issues promptly.
Local police have assured the community that they take such matters seriously. They emphasized their commitment to maintaining law and order on campus. The quick arrests demonstrate their determination to handle campus violence effectively.
