The local administration, in collaboration with the Punjab Police, is actively installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at nine additional major junctions across the city. This initiative marks the second phase of a comprehensive project designed to transform Mohali into a more secure and intelligently managed urban center.
Building on a Successful First Phase
The foundation for this expansion was laid during the project's initial phase. Around 400 CCTV cameras were strategically deployed at 20 major intersections throughout Mohali. This existing network has already proven to be an invaluable asset for law enforcement. Police officials confirm that the footage from these cameras has been instrumental in numerous instances, enabling swift and effective action in both crime control and traffic regulation. The tangible benefits observed from the first phase have directly fueled the drive for further expansion.
Details of the Second Phase Expansion
Work on the second phase is currently in progress. The plan entails covering nine new key junctions with advanced surveillance technology. As of early January 2026, cameras have already been installed at four of the identified locations. Authorities have indicated that work at the remaining five intersections is scheduled to commence imminently.
The execution of this entire project is being managed by the Punjab Police Housing Corporation. The cameras chosen for installation are equipped with modern technology to ensure high-quality, clear video capture during both daytime and nighttime hours, maximizing their utility for 24/7 surveillance.
Locations and Logistical Adjustments
The new junctions slated for coverage under this phase include prominent areas such as Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan in Sohana, CP-67, Phase 3A near Khalsa College, the Jagatpura entry point, and the Chhat Light Point area. However, the rollout has encountered some minor logistical adjustments due to ongoing infrastructure work.
For instance, the installation at a newly planned junction on Airport Road will experience a slight delay as construction activity is still underway at the site. Police officials have assured that this location will be integrated into the network as soon as the civil work is complete.
Furthermore, due to ongoing junction construction work at Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan, Sohana, and the CP-67 area, the Punjab Police Housing Corporation has proactively written to the Senior Superintendent of Police. In the communication, they have requested suitable alternative locations for camera installation at these sites to prevent any gaps in the city's security arrangements during the construction period.
Commitment to Timely Completion
When contacted for an update, Ranjodh Singh, Chief Engineer of the Punjab Police Housing Corporation, provided a clear timeline. He stated that work on the remaining five junctions has already been initiated and is expected to be finalized within the coming days.
