Mohali Police Takes Strict Action on Holi Over Hooliganism and Harassment Complaints

In a decisive move to maintain order during the Holi festival, Mohali police detained several youths and impounded multiple vehicles after receiving complaints of hooliganism and harassment of women in busy markets across the city. The action was concentrated in key areas including Phase 7, Phase 3B2, and Phase 5 to ensure peaceful celebrations and prevent any untoward incidents.

Special Police Teams Deployed to Monitor Sensitive Areas

Officials confirmed that special teams were deployed in sensitive locations on the directions of senior police officers. The primary objective was to prevent misbehaviour and maintain public order during the festive period. Superintendent of Police Saurav Jindal stated that checkpoints were strategically set up at major market routes, with teams stationed at spots known for recurring incidents of unruly behaviour.

"Teams were specifically deployed to monitor markets where hooliganism is usually reported. Several revellers who were forcing colours on unwilling women and passers-by were promptly detained," Jindal emphasized, highlighting the police's proactive approach.

Crackdown on Traffic Violations and Unruly Conduct

In addition to addressing harassment, police also launched a rigorous crackdown on traffic violations. Multiple two-wheelers and other vehicles were impounded for offenses such as overloading and flouting traffic norms. Traffic DSP Karnail Singh reported that 18 vehicles were seized during the checking drive and later released after challans were issued.

Police personnel were actively involved in dispersing groups of youths who were creating disturbances by shouting slogans, causing nuisance, or attempting to throw colours at passers-by. As a preventive measure, some youngsters suspected to be under the influence of alcohol were taken to nearby police stations and detained until evening to curb potential escalation of disorderly conduct.

Ensuring a Safe and Joyful Festival Atmosphere

The comprehensive police action underscores a commitment to safeguarding citizens, particularly women, during festive occasions. By impounding vehicles and detaining individuals engaged in hooliganism, authorities aimed to send a strong message against antisocial behaviour. This initiative not only addressed immediate complaints but also contributed to fostering a safer and more respectful environment for all residents and visitors celebrating Holi in Mohali.
