Major Gold Heist in Mumbai: Two Arrested, Minor Detained in Rs 7.88 Crore Theft Case
In a significant development, Mumbai police have arrested two individuals and detained a minor in connection with a high-value theft of 5 kilograms of gold ornaments, estimated to be worth a staggering Rs 7.88 crore. The audacious robbery targeted the 'My Gold Point' jewellery store located in the IC Colony area of Borivali West.
Insider Involvement and Police Investigation
Authorities revealed that the theft likely occurred during the intervening night of January 13 and 14. The case involves insider participation, with at least two employees of the store vanishing immediately after the crime. These staff members had been entrusted with the keys to securely lock the premises after business hours. Exploiting this trust, they allegedly emptied multiple jewellery display cases and absconded with the substantial haul of gold.
Upon discovering the theft, the MHB Colony Police Station swiftly formed a dedicated team to investigate. The investigation involved meticulously checking CCTV footage from the vicinity to trace the movements and whereabouts of the suspects. Senior police officials confirmed that the identities of both the missing employees were known to them from the outset.
Arrests, Recovery, and Ongoing Manhunt
Under the direct supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police Sandeep Jadhav and Senior Inspector Harish Gawli, the police team successfully apprehended one of the implicated employees along with an accomplice. Additionally, a minor connected to the case was detained and has subsequently been sent to an observation home.
To date, the police have managed to recover approximately one kilogram of the stolen gold. However, a significant portion of the loot remains missing. "We have recovered one kilogram of gold. The other employee is still on the run with the remaining 4 kilograms of gold," stated a police official involved in the case. The official further elaborated that this fugitive employee had accomplices who assisted in organizing transportation to facilitate his escape after the incident.
The police are actively searching for at least two to three more accused persons believed to be involved in orchestrating or aiding the theft. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to recover the remaining stolen gold and bring all perpetrators to justice.
