A significant increase in footfall at cafes across east and south Nagpur has raised serious alarms among local residents and authorities in the lead-up to Valentine's Day. The establishments, which have seen their promotions go viral on social media platforms, are offering "private spaces for couples" at competitive rates, drawing the attention of the police department following recent night-long violence in the Nandanvan area.
Residents Voice Concerns Over Cafe Proliferation
Frustrated citizens from Gurudeo Nagar have alleged that the rapid spread of these cafes is creating an environment that encourages uncontrolled consumption of drugs and alcohol, along with promiscuous behavior, particularly among high school and college students. A local trader from Gurudeo Nagar explained to TOI that numerous cafes in neighborhoods like Nandanvan, Gurudeo Nagar, and nearby localities have introduced private compartments featuring curtains and dim lighting.
These setups promise food, ambiance, and privacy in ways that many locals describe as "questionable". Social media promotions aggressively highlight these privacy features, often focusing more on facilities "meant for couples" than on the quality of food or services offered. A police officer noted that such marketing tactics seem specifically designed to attract young crowds looking for secluded spaces.
Police Response and Community Action
Sources indicate that Joint Commissioner of Police Navinchandra Reddy, under directives from Commissioner of Police Ravinder Singal, has instructed officers to intensify drives against illegal activities operating under the guise of cafe businesses. Residents report that these venues have become hotspots for student groups, where open smoking and liquor consumption are common occurrences.
A Nandanvan resident, speaking anonymously, described concerning scenes: "Bulk of girls accompany boys and are commonly found smoking and boozing. These girls come with covered faces and walk out with an unsteady gait and somehow zoom away riding pillion with boys."
Parents and community members express deep worry that such activities are luring impressionable youth into harmful habits under the pretense of casual hangouts. One resident revealed plans to meet with both the Commissioner of Police and the collector to address these concerns directly.

The issue gained renewed attention following a recent incident of night-long violence in Nandanvan, where a confrontation escalated into arson and nearly sparked communal tensions. While the immediate trigger was reportedly an argument over public urination, sources suggest the incident exposed deeper problems associated with the unchecked cafe culture in Nagpur's eastern and southern sectors.
Late-night gatherings at these establishments have been linked to rowdy behavior and physical clashes, prompting authorities to take decisive action. Reddy confirmed that necessary instructions to inspect cafes have been issued, stating: "We are planning stringent actions under CP's leadership."
