Nashik Police Launch Major Traffic Enforcement Drive, Fines Exceed Rs 77 Lakh
In a significant crackdown on traffic violations, the Nashik police have imposed fines totaling over Rs 77 lakh on more than 11,000 drivers since the beginning of the year. Senior police officials disclosed this information on Wednesday, highlighting a special enforcement initiative aimed at enhancing road safety across the city.
Drive Targets Accident Reduction Under Police Commissioner's Directives
Assistant Police Commissioner Sandeep Mitke, who also serves as the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), explained that the campaign was launched following directives from Police Commissioner Sandeep Karnik. "Our primary goal is to reduce road accidents and related fatalities within the Nashik police commissionerate limits," Mitke stated. "We have initiated a focused drive targeting motorists who violate traffic regulations to achieve this objective."
Coordinated Effort with RTO and Local Police Stations
The enforcement drive, which commenced on January 1, is being conducted in coordination with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) Nashik, the city traffic branch, and local police stations. Mitke emphasized that the initiative's core purpose is to curb road accidents and decrease the number of injuries and fatalities on Nashik's roads.
Detailed Breakdown of Traffic Violations and Penalties
According to police data, the most common violations recorded include:
- Obstructing vehicular movement: 2,285 cases
- Signal jumping: 1,907 cases
- Riding triple-seat on two-wheelers: 1,347 cases
- Autorickshaw drivers allowing passengers in the front seat: 761 cases
- Not wearing mandatory uniform: 692 cases
Additional violations highlighted in the data involve:
- 1,273 motorists booked for driving on the wrong side of the road
- 435 penalized for using tinted films on vehicle windows
- 601 autorickshaw drivers operating without a valid driving licence or permit
Focus on Autorickshaw Monitoring and Specific Offenses
The police department has placed special emphasis on monitoring autorickshaw drivers, taking action against 462 of them since the start of the year. Further penalties were imposed on 142 autorickshaw drivers for carrying more passengers than permitted and 15 motorcyclists for modifying their bike silencers.
Drunk Driving Cases and Court-Imposed Fines
In January alone, the police booked 94 motorists for drunk driving. These cases were forwarded to the Motor Vehicle Court in Nashik Road, which imposed fines amounting to Rs 7.5 lakh, underscoring the serious consequences of such violations.
