A four-member delegation from the National Human Rights Commission conducted a detailed site inspection at the Anandapur warehouse in Nazirabad, Kolkata, on Tuesday. This visit comes in the wake of a devastating fire that erupted on January 26, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 27 lives.
Comprehensive Investigation Underway
The NHRC team meticulously examined the accident location alongside officers from the Baruipur Narendrapur Police. The rights body had previously taken suo motu cognisance of the incident on January 30, following a formal complaint that alleged severe human rights violations at the site. To date, three individuals have been apprehended in connection with the fire, and a special investigation team has been established to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Detailed Examination of the Warehouse Site
During their inspection, the commission members focused on specific areas where bodies were recovered, providing a somber assessment of the scene. The warehouse complex housed two separate godowns: one operated by a decorator and another affiliated with a well-known food chain. The NHRC team has already secured the operational paperwork for both warehouses to scrutinize whether they possessed the necessary permissions and adhered to regulatory standards for their operations.
Review of Working and Living Conditions
Beyond the immediate fire investigation, the team conducted a thorough review of the working conditions within the warehouse. This evaluation is part of a broader inquiry into the safety and welfare of individuals employed at the site. The NHRC will also examine the role and responsibility of local authorities in overseeing both the working and living conditions of people associated with the warehouse, aiming to identify any systemic failures or negligence.
The commission's proactive approach underscores its commitment to addressing potential human rights abuses and ensuring accountability in the aftermath of such catastrophic events. The findings from this inspection are expected to contribute significantly to the ongoing investigation and any subsequent legal or regulatory actions.
