NHRC Seeks Report on Ludhiana Cloth Merchant Couple's Suicide Over Harassment
NHRC Seeks Report on Couple's Suicide Over Harassment

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Deputy Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Ludhiana to submit an action-taken report within two weeks regarding a complaint that a cloth merchant couple was driven to suicide by recovery agents of a private bank in July 2025.

Complaint Alleges Mental Torture and Public Humiliation

The NHRC acted on a complaint filed by social activist Keemti Rawal of Chand Nagar, Ludhiana. According to the complaint, Jasbir Singh and his wife Kuldeep Kaur, who ran a cloth business, consumed poison after enduring repeated harassment and public disgrace by recovery agents. The couple's suicide notes reportedly detailed the mental torture and humiliation they faced.

The complaint further alleged that such recovery agents often operate with political backing, and the police and administration remain passive, allowing these incidents to continue unchecked. It highlighted a rise in such inhumane acts, leaving ordinary citizens with little legal protection.

NHRC Directs Probe and Fast-Track Trial

In its communication dated June 30, the NHRC observed that if the allegations are true, they constitute a violation of the victims' human rights. The commission forwarded the complaint to the Deputy Commissioner and SSP, asking them to investigate and submit a detailed report within two weeks. The complainant also urged the commission to direct strict legal action against bank officials and recovery agents, and to seek a fast-track court trial for the matter.

Background of the Incident

The couple died by suicide in July 2025. The complaint claims that recovery agents from a private bank subjected them to severe harassment and public humiliation, which directly led to their decision to end their lives. The case has raised concerns about the tactics used by recovery agents and the lack of accountability.
