Nigerian Student Detained in Ajmer for Overstaying Visa Without Extension

A Criminal Investigation Department (CID) team in Ajmer detained a Nigerian student on Thursday for overstaying in India without a valid visa. The student has been transferred to a detention centre in Alwar district, and the state home department has been notified to initiate deportation proceedings and blacklist him from India.

Campaign Against Illegal Residents in Ajmer

According to officials, a targeted campaign is currently underway to identify and act against individuals residing illegally in Ajmer. During this operation, authorities received specific intelligence regarding the Nigerian national, Najeeb Isha Lawan, aged 27, who was living in Ajmer despite his visa having expired.

Najeeb Isha Lawan arrived in India on September 6, 2023, after securing admission to an MSc (Information Technology) programme at a private university in Ajmer. However, he never attended the university and instead traveled to various parts of the country. His visa was initially valid for a period of two years, but he failed to register for an extension in any region of India, even while staying in Ajmer.

Official Statement and Legal Actions

Rajesh Meena, Additional Superintendent of Police of CID, provided details on the detention. "A CID team, with assistance from Ajmer police, detained Najeeb. With the support of local police, he was subsequently sent to the detention centre in Alwar," Meena stated. The case has been escalated to the state home department, which will oversee the deportation process and ensure the student is blacklisted, preventing future entry into India.

The incident highlights ongoing efforts by Indian authorities to enforce immigration laws and address visa violations. Such measures are part of broader initiatives to maintain legal compliance among foreign nationals residing in the country.
