Odisha Police Rescue Toddler Allegedly Sold by Father for Rs 1 Lakh in Balasore
In a shocking incident from Balasore, Odisha, police have successfully rescued a two-and-a-half-year-old boy who was allegedly sold by his own father for Rs 1 lakh. Officials confirmed that both the father, identified as Rakesh Kumar Behera, and the suspected buyer have been detained as the investigation unfolds.
Viral Video Leads to Police Action
The case came to light after a video, purportedly showing the father negotiating with a prospective buyer, went viral on social media platforms. A local activist, upon viewing the disturbing footage, filed a formal complaint at the Nilgiri police station. While the authenticity of the video has not been independently verified by PTI, it prompted immediate police intervention.
Swift Rescue and Official Response
Nilgiri Sub-divisional Police Officer Pramod Kumar Mallick stated that the child was traced to the Chiminibhati area, rescued promptly, and produced before the Child Welfare Committee for care and protection. "Further investigation is underway to uncover all details of this distressing case," Mallick added, emphasizing the seriousness of the allegations.
Police revealed that Behera, a mason by profession, allegedly received Rs 50,000 as an initial payment in the transaction. In a statement to reporters, Behera cited severe financial distress as the driving force behind his decision, shedding light on the desperate circumstances that led to this act.
Background of the Family
According to police sources, Behera had been married twice, with the rescued child born to his second wife. It was noted that the second wife is currently living separately from Behera, adding a layer of complexity to the family dynamics involved in this case.
The Odisha Police's swift action highlights ongoing efforts to combat child trafficking and protect vulnerable minors in the region. Authorities continue to investigate the full extent of the network and motivations behind this alleged sale, ensuring that justice is served for the young victim.
