Vigilance Bureau Nabs Panchayat Overseer in Major Bribery Sting Operation
The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) executed a successful trap operation on Tuesday night, apprehending an overseer from the Vadavucode-Puthencruz grama panchayat while he was in the act of accepting a substantial bribe of Rs 15 lakh. The arrest underscores ongoing efforts to combat corruption at the local governance level.
Details of the Bribery Scheme
The accused, identified as Deepesh Kumar, a resident of Haripuram in Kasaragod, allegedly solicited the bribe from an individual based in Ernakulam. The complainant had sought a completion certificate for a newly constructed warehouse, having submitted an online application on January 21. During a subsequent site inspection, Kumar reportedly demanded a bribe of Rs 20 lakh to process and issue the necessary certificate.
When the complainant expressed financial constraints and inability to pay the full amount, Kumar negotiated the bribe down to Rs 15 lakh. This interaction highlights the predatory nature of the demand, targeting citizens seeking essential services.
The Trap and Arrest
On Monday, during an in-person meeting, Kumar instructed the complainant to deliver the bribe amount near the Kakkanad collectorate at 9 PM on Tuesday. Acting promptly, the complainant reported the matter to the Deputy Superintendent of Police at the VACB Ernakulam unit.
Following detailed instructions, a specialized vigilance team set up a covert trap and maintained surveillance at the designated location. At approximately 9:15 PM, the team moved in and caught Kumar red-handed as he accepted Rs 5 lakh in cash along with a cheque for Rs 10 lakh. The operation was conducted with precision, ensuring evidence collection for legal proceedings.
Legal Proceedings and Implications
The accused is scheduled to be presented before the Muvattupuzha vigilance court, where formal charges will be filed. This case serves as a stark reminder of the vigilance authorities' commitment to rooting out corruption, particularly in local administrative bodies where such malpractices can directly impact citizens.
This incident raises concerns about transparency and integrity in grama panchayat operations, urging stricter oversight and accountability measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
