Tension gripped Salem city late on Saturday night after unidentified miscreants allegedly hurled petrol-filled bottles at a TASMAC liquor outlet near Gorimedu on Yercaud Main Road.
Incident Details
According to Kannankurichi police, two men arrived on a motorcycle and threw three petrol-filled bottles — two at the TASMAC outlet and one at a nearby establishment — before fleeing the scene. At the time of the incident, staff had closed the shutters and were inside tallying the day's sales, a police official said.
One of the bottles struck the iron grill in front of the shop, bursting outside and setting fire to liquor bottles stacked near the entrance. The flames quickly spread, damaging several bottles and causing panic in the area.
Investigation Underway
Kannankurichi police rushed to the spot and launched an investigation. As part of the initial probe, officers are examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area to identify the culprits.
Authorities confirmed that no casualties were reported, but the attack sparked concern among residents and shopkeepers in the locality. Police sources said the motive behind the petrol bomb attack is yet to be established, and efforts are under way to trace the suspects.
