The victim, identified as K Sulochana, a 69-year-old resident of Samayapuram in Trichy district, was traveling from the Allithurai bus stop to Kumaran Nagar on February 12. According to police reports, the theft occurred while she was on the bus, though she only realized the loss upon alighting at her destination.
Sulochana immediately noticed that her 3.5 sovereign gold chain was missing and promptly reported the incident to the local police station. Initial investigations led officers to suspect that a skilled pickpocket had snatched the chain during the crowded bus ride.
Police Investigation and Arrest
The General Hospital Crime Police registered a formal case under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), launching a thorough investigation. Police teams questioned multiple witnesses and potential suspects before narrowing their focus to V Kumar, a 45-year-old resident of Edamalaiyapatti Pudur.
After taking Kumar into custody, investigators conducted detailed interrogations. During questioning, Kumar reportedly confessed to stealing the gold chain from Sulochana while she was traveling on the bus. His admission provided crucial evidence in the case.
Recovery of Stolen Property and Legal Proceedings
Following Kumar's confession, police managed to recover approximately 1.5 sovereigns of the stolen 3.5-sovereign gold chain. Investigators revealed that Kumar had allegedly sold the remaining portion of the chain before his arrest, explaining why only part of the jewelry was retrieved.
The arrested suspect was presented before a judicial magistrate and has been remanded in judicial custody. The case continues as authorities work to trace the remaining stolen gold and complete their investigation.
