Police Encounter Erupts at Abandoned Bathinda Shopping Mall
In a dramatic early morning operation, police engaged in a shootout with five individuals at an incomplete shopping mall located near Bathinda railway station on Tuesday. The confrontation resulted in one of the accused sustaining a bullet injury to his leg, while the remaining four were apprehended by authorities without any further bloodshed.
Background of Criminal Activity at the Site
Local residents had filed numerous complaints regarding anti-social elements who were allegedly involved in snatching incidents targeting passengers arriving at or departing from the railway station during odd hours. These criminals had reportedly turned the abandoned multi-storey building into their shelter after committing various offenses. Furthermore, the structure was being used as a location for drug consumption, adding to the concerns of the community.
Police Operation Based on Intelligence Tip
Bathinda superintendent of police (city) Narinder Singh revealed that law enforcement received specific intelligence about anti-social elements operating from the deserted mall. Acting swiftly on this information, a police team was dispatched to the location. Upon arrival, the officers were met with gunfire from some of the individuals present. In response, the police retaliated, leading to the injury of one suspect.
The injured individual was identified as Neeraj, also known as Kala, who suffered a bullet wound to his leg. The other four arrested persons were named as Ghota (Neeraj's brother), Karan, Rahul, and Vikramjit. All five have significant criminal histories, with Neeraj and Ghota each facing seven separate cases, while Karan and Vikramjit are implicated in two cases each.
Legal Charges Filed Against the Accused
Following the arrest, a formal case has been registered against the accused under multiple charges. These include dacoity, violations of the Arms Act, and offenses under the NDPS Act. Superintendent Singh emphasized the seriousness of the allegations and the ongoing efforts to curb such criminal activities in the area.
The incident highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in dealing with abandoned structures that become hubs for illegal activities. Authorities have assured the public of continued vigilance and action to ensure safety around key transit points like the Bathinda railway station.
