Ghaziabad: Pregnant Woman's Tragic Death Sparks Dowry Death Probe
In a distressing incident in Ghaziabad, police recovered the body of a 26-year-old woman from her rented residence in Khoda Colony on Monday evening. The deceased, identified as Chandini Kewat, was four months pregnant, according to authorities.
Details of the Incident
Police stated that Chandini died by hanging herself in the room. However, the rope later snapped, causing her to fall to the floor and sustain head injuries. Abhishek Srivastava, ACP (Indirapuram), indicated that the incident is believed to have occurred on Sunday.
Chandini's 1.5-year-old son remained in the room with her body for over 24 hours. Her husband, Vipin Kewat, stayed there for some time after the incident before fleeing the scene.
Background and Discovery
A senior police officer revealed that Chandini had married Vipin Kewat, a 27-year-old daily wage labourer, approximately three years ago. The couple had been residing in the rented accommodation for the past 15 days.
On Monday evening, Vipin's brother arrived at the house and opened the door. Upon seeing the body, he ran away, which alerted the landlord. The landlord then discovered the body and immediately informed the police. Chandini's child was found crying near the body during this discovery.
Police Investigation and Legal Action
Preliminary inquiries disclosed that Vipin had left the room a few hours before the body was found and has since been absconding. Based on a complaint filed by Chandini's father, a case has been registered at Khoda police station against Vipin and nine of his family members.
The charges include sections 80(2) for dowry death and 85 for cruelty by a husband or his relatives towards a woman under the BNS, along with relevant sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act. Police have formed special teams to trace the accused individuals involved in this case.
This tragic event highlights ongoing concerns about dowry-related violence in the region, prompting a thorough investigation by local authorities to ensure justice for the victim and her family.
