A devastating incident in Pune's Warje area has left a family shattered and a community in shock. A young mother allegedly took the life of her two-year-old daughter, who was battling a serious bone disease, before ending her own life on Friday, January 3, 2026.
A Father's Horrific Discovery
The grim scene was uncovered by Adinath Devadkar, a 30-year-old electrician, when he returned to his home in Gokul Nagar, located behind the Kargil Farm House, from work. He had left for his job around 9 am. Upon returning at approximately 1:30 pm, he found the door to his residence locked from inside.
"He knocked multiple times, but there was no response, so he informed the police," stated Police Sub-Inspector Vinayak Kapse, the investigating officer. A police team swiftly arrived at the spot, forced open the door, and found Chhaya Devadkar (28) and her daughter Sharvi unconscious. They were rushed to a hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead.
Suicide Note Points to Distress Over Child's Illness
The police investigation has revealed a heart-wrenching motive behind the extreme step. According to the authorities, Chhaya Devadkar was deeply distressed over her daughter Sharvi's prolonged ill health. The two-year-old was suffering from a bone disease, the constant struggle of which is believed to have taken a severe mental toll on the mother.
A suicide note left by Chhaya was recovered by the police, further corroborating the initial findings. The bodies of the mother and daughter were handed over to the grieving family after the completion of the postmortem procedure.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Probe
Adinath Devadkar lodged a formal First Information Report (FIR) at the Warje Malwadi police station. In a tragic legal turn, the police have registered a case against the deceased mother, Chhaya Devadkar, under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
While the primary facts of the case are clear, the police have stated that further investigation is ongoing to piece together the complete sequence of events and the full extent of the circumstances that led to this double tragedy. The incident has cast a pall over the Warje locality, highlighting the immense psychological pressure caregivers of critically ill children can face.
