Pune Police Crack Down on Major Interstate Drug Network

In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Pune City Police have successfully dismantled a sophisticated interstate drug racket operating between Maharashtra and Rajasthan. The operation, conducted between February 3 and 11 this year, led to the arrest of seven individuals, including two gift shopkeepers from Wagholi, for their involvement in the illicit trade of mephedrone.

Massive Haul of Drugs and Assets Seized

Law enforcement authorities recovered a substantial quantity of mephedrone along with high-value assets, with the total seizure estimated at a staggering Rs 4.27 crore. The confiscated items include 1.96 kilograms of mephedrone, cash, multiple mobile phones, and several vehicles. Notably, among the seized vehicles was a high-end SUV, highlighting the lucrative nature of the illegal operation.

Key Arrests and Operational Details

The arrested suspects have been identified as:

  • Motisingh Rajpurohit (28) and Harish Ramdevasi (22), both gift shop owners in Wagholi
  • Amit Sunil Ghule (40), a small-time builder from Manjari, Pune
  • Yogesh alias Manish Bishnoi (30), Sachin alias SK Bishnoi (20), and Ramkaran Jat alias Siyag, all residents of Jodhpur, Rajasthan
  • Ratanlal Kisnaram Jat (20) of Balotra, Rajasthan

The investigation was spearheaded by Deputy Commissioners of Police Nikhil Pingale and Somay Munde, who coordinated efforts to trace and apprehend the suspects across state lines.

How the Racket Was Uncovered

The breakthrough came on February 3, when police intercepted a car in Kharadi and apprehended the two Wagholi-based shopkeepers. A search of the vehicle revealed mephedrone valued at Rs 12.41 lakh, leading to the registration of a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, at the Kharadi police station.

"We decided to establish the entire link of the drug racket," explained DCP Somay Munde. "Our team started questioning them, and the duo revealed the name of Yogesh Bishnoi. Soon, our team nabbed him. In this way, we went on arresting other suspects in the case and finally managed to nab Ramkaran Jat."

Mastermind and Interstate Operations

Police identified Ramkaran Jat as the primary supplier of mephedrone in Pune. Operating from his grocery shop in Kapooriya village near Jodhpur, Jat allegedly collected drugs from various sources in Rajasthan and transported them to Pune for distribution.

"He runs the shop but is actively involved in drug trading," stated DCP Munde. "He collects drugs from different people in Rajasthan and sends these to Pune. We suspect that he might be selling drugs in other cities as well. We have come across his involvement in two other mephedrone cases at present. So far, the source of the drugs is not known."

DCP Nikhil Pingale added, "Ramkaran Jat is the main supplier of mephedrone in Pune. While probing two other cases involving this drug, we came across his name and began searching for him."

Broader Implications and Ongoing Investigation

The arrests underscore the persistent challenge of interstate drug trafficking in India. The police have confirmed that the racket was operational in both Maharashtra and Rajasthan, with one suspect specifically tasked with transporting drugs from Rajasthan to Pune for sale.

In a related development, Amit Ghule, the builder from Hadapsar-Manjari, was found using his high-end SUV to distribute drugs among his acquaintances, illustrating how legitimate businesses can be exploited for criminal activities.

The Pune City Police continue to investigate the case, aiming to uncover the full extent of the network and identify additional sources and distributors involved in the illicit trade.
