Punjab Police SIT Records Statements in SGPC Guru Granth Sahib Saroops Disappearance Probe
In a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of 328 saroops of the Guru Granth Sahib from Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) records, the Punjab Police special investigation team (SIT) recorded the statements of five SGPC employees and trustees on Saturday. This move comes as part of a meticulous probe aimed at uncovering the truth behind this sensitive religious matter.
Statements Recorded Under Bhartiya Nayaya Sanhita
According to SGPC legal adviser Amanbir Singh Siali, the statements were formally recorded under Section 180 of the Bhartiya Nayaya Sanhita. Among the five individuals questioned was trustee Sukhdev Singh Bhaur, highlighting the SIT's focus on both current and former officials involved with the SGPC. Siali further revealed that the SIT has issued summons to a total of 40 serving and retired SGPC officials, requiring them to appear at the police commissioner's office for questioning.
Criticism from Religious Leaders Over Investigation Methods
The summoning of SGPC employees and trustees to the police station has sparked criticism from prominent religious figures. Giani Raghbir Singh, the head granthi of the Golden Temple and former jathedar of Akal Takht, expressed concerns about what he described as mental harassment of staff under the guise of investigation. He stated that he received information via social media and other sources indicating the SIT called the 40 persons again for statements, despite all statements having been previously recorded during Dr Ishar Singh's report.
Raghbir Singh emphasized his desire for the truth to emerge, but insisted that no employee should be subjected to physical or mental harassment in the name of the investigation. He clarified that the SGPC is providing full support to the investigation team, with the SIT chief himself confirming the committee's assistance. In this context, he urged the administration and government to ensure the investigation proceeds smoothly without imposing unnecessary mental pressure on officials.
Ongoing Investigation and Future Steps
Siali noted that the SIT had earlier recorded statements of six persons, and the statements of the remaining individuals are yet to be recorded. This indicates that the investigation is still in its active phase, with more developments expected as the SIT continues to gather evidence and testimonies. The case has drawn widespread attention due to its religious significance and the involvement of key SGPC figures.
The Punjab Police SIT remains committed to a thorough and transparent investigation, balancing the need for accountability with respect for the individuals involved. As the probe unfolds, stakeholders are watching closely to see how authorities handle this delicate situation while upholding justice and religious sensitivities.
