Sasaram Court Delivers Life Sentences in Six-Year-Old Murder Case
In a significant verdict, the court of district judge-IV Anil Kumar in Sasaram has sentenced three individuals to life imprisonment for the murder of Rohit Raj, also known as Ramu, in a case dating back to 2019. The court imposed an additional fine of Rs 30,000 on each convict, marking the culmination of a lengthy legal process.
Details of the Conviction and Incident
The convicts, identified as Kailash Khatik (alias Kailash Sonkar), Jitendra Khatik (alias Jitendra Sonkar), and Pradeep Khatik, were found guilty after a full trial. Kailash and Jitendra are residents of Takiya in Sasaram, while Pradeep hails from Kadirganj under Darigaon. The murder occurred on September 6, 2019, in the Takiya locality under the jurisdiction of Sasaram Town police station.
According to public prosecutor Anil Kumar Singh, the incident unfolded when Rohit left his home around 6:30 AM, informing his family that he was going to meet the accused at the Takiya High School ground. When he failed to return by nightfall, his father Kashi Prasad and uncle Banarasi Prasad initiated a search.
Investigation and Discovery of the Body
Workers at the school ground, who were preparing a Durga Puja pandal, revealed to the family that Rohit had engaged in an altercation with the accused. They alleged that the convicts forced him onto a motorcycle and took him towards the main road. Despite an extensive search throughout the night, the family could not locate Rohit and subsequently reported the matter to the police.
The following day, police recovered a body from the Chitauli canal, which was later identified by family members as that of Rohit. The FIR was registered at Sasaram Town police station, and the case proceeded to trial in the court of district judge-IV.
Motive Behind the Murder
The prosecution established that the murder was motivated by a land dispute between the families of the victim and the accused. This long-standing conflict ultimately led to the tragic incident, highlighting the severe consequences of such disputes in local communities.
The sentencing underscores the judiciary's commitment to delivering justice in criminal cases, even after several years. The life imprisonment terms and fines serve as a stern reminder of the legal repercussions for violent crimes.
