Sasaram Court Delivers Life Sentences in Six-Year-Old Murder Case
The District Judge-IV court in Sasaram, presided over by Judge Anil Kumar, has handed down life imprisonment sentences to three individuals convicted of murder in a case dating back to 2019. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on each convict for their involvement in the killing of Rohit Raj, also known as Ramu.
Details of the Conviction and Trial
On Wednesday, the court found Kailash Khatik (alias Kailash Sonkar), Jitendra Khatik (alias Jitendra Sonkar), and Pradeep Khatik guilty after a comprehensive trial. Kailash and Jitendra are residents of Takiya in Sasaram, while Pradeep hails from Kadirganj under Darigaon. The First Information Report (FIR) was originally filed at the Sasaram Town police station, and the proceedings were conducted in the court of District Judge-IV.
Background of the Incident
The tragic event occurred on September 6, 2019, in the Takiya locality under the jurisdiction of the Sasaram Town police station. According to Public Prosecutor Anil Kumar Singh, Rohit Raj left his home around 6:30 AM that day, informing his family that he was heading to meet the accused at the Takiya High School ground.
When Rohit failed to return by nightfall, his father Kashi Prasad and uncle Banarasi Prasad initiated a search. Workers at the school ground, who were setting up a Durga Puja pandal, reported witnessing an altercation between Rohit and the accused. They alleged that the accused forcibly placed Rohit on a motorcycle and took him toward the main road.
Discovery of the Body and Investigation
Despite an extensive search throughout the night, the family was unable to locate Rohit and subsequently alerted the police. The following day, authorities recovered a body from the Chitauli canal, which was later identified by family members as that of Rohit Raj.
The prosecution presented evidence indicating that the murder was motivated by a land dispute between the families involved. This long-standing conflict culminated in the violent incident that led to Rohit's death.
Legal Proceedings and Outcome
The case underwent a full trial over six years, with the court meticulously examining the evidence and testimonies. The conviction and sentencing underscore the judicial system's commitment to addressing violent crimes and delivering justice for victims and their families.
This ruling serves as a significant milestone in the legal process, highlighting the consequences of such acts and the importance of resolving disputes through lawful means rather than violence.
