A 35-year-old scooter rider was killed in a hit-and-run incident in northwestern Bengaluru on Tuesday evening. Police tracked down the driver and took him into custody. He has been booked for causing death by negligence.
Incident Details
The accident occurred around 7:30 PM near the Jalahalli Cross junction. The victim, identified as Ravi Kumar, a resident of Peenya, was heading home when a speeding car hit his scooter and fled the scene. Passersby alerted the police, who rushed Kumar to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Investigation and Arrest
Using CCTV footage from the area, police identified the car's license plate and traced the driver, identified as Suresh, a 28-year-old resident of Yeshwanthpur. He was arrested within hours of the incident. According to police, Suresh admitted to losing control of the vehicle and panicking, leading him to flee. He has been booked under Section 304A of the Indian Penal Code (causing death by negligence) and relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Police Statement
“We acted swiftly based on CCTV evidence and technical surveillance. The accused is in custody and will be produced before the court,” said a senior police officer from the Jalahalli police station. “Hit-and-run cases are taken very seriously, and we urge drivers to stay at the scene and report accidents immediately.”

The incident has raised concerns about road safety in the area. Local residents have called for better traffic enforcement and speed breakers near Jalahalli Cross, a known accident-prone spot. According to data from the Bengaluru Traffic Police, the city recorded over 600 fatal accidents in the past year, with hit-and-run cases accounting for roughly 15% of them.
Legal Proceedings
The accused driver was produced before a magistrate court on Wednesday and remanded to judicial custody. Police are investigating whether he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. The victim's family has been informed, and further legal proceedings are underway.
