Ahmedabad's Shastri Bridge Traffic Restrictions Prolonged Until 2027
In a significant development for local commuters, the Ahmedabad City Police have officially extended the traffic restrictions on the Shastri Bridge, a vital link over the Sabarmati river, until January 7, 2027. This decision, announced on February 7, 2026, comes as a response to ongoing structural concerns and necessary repairs identified by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).
Structural Deterioration Prompts Extended Ban
The extension follows an initial notification issued on August 25, 2025, which restricted the movement of heavy, medium goods, and passenger vehicles on the bridge due to severe deterioration of its bearing structures and pedestals. That restriction was set to expire on February 8, 2026, but has now been prolonged by nearly a year to ensure public safety and allow for comprehensive repair work.
The Shastri Bridge serves as a crucial connector between the Vishala circle on the western bank and the Pirana circle on the eastern bank of the Sabarmati river. The police commissioner authorized this move after NHAI assessments highlighted significant structural issues that could pose risks if heavy traffic continues.
Alternate Routes for Affected Commuters
To mitigate inconvenience for drivers, authorities have outlined alternative routes for those impacted by the ban:
- Route from Jashodanagar and NE-1: Vehicles should turn right at Pirana junction, proceed towards the Pirana dumpyard, then head to Behrampura crossroads, cross the Ambedkar Bridge, reach Anjali crossroads, and finally move towards Vishala.
- Route from Juhapura: Commuters can go to Anjali crossroads, turn right to cross the Ambedkar Bridge, arrive at Behrampura crossroads, continue to the Pirana dumpyard, and then proceed to Pirana junction.
These detours are designed to maintain traffic flow while ensuring safety during the repair period. The extension underscores the importance of addressing infrastructure decay proactively, with the NHAI and local police collaborating to prevent potential hazards.
As repairs progress, residents and businesses in Ahmedabad are advised to plan their travel accordingly and stay updated on any further announcements regarding the bridge's status. This move reflects a broader commitment to urban safety and infrastructure maintenance in the city.
