The recent bus fire incident in Shivamogga continues to send shockwaves through the community, with survivors and locals grappling with the traumatic aftermath. Authorities have emphasized the critical role of properly functioning emergency doors in preventing a far greater tragedy. If the emergency exits had not been opened correctly, nearly half of the passengers could have faced severe peril, officials stated, highlighting the narrow escape from a more catastrophic outcome.
Vehicle Inspection and Fitness Report Underway
BN Vasudev, the senior inspector of the assistant regional transport office (ARTO) Sagar division, provided details to TOI regarding the bus involved. The vehicle, manufactured in 2019, possessed all up-to-date documents and was equipped with a rear emergency exit. Vasudev, along with his colleague Malleshappa from Shivamogga, conducted a thorough inspection of the bus on Wednesday. They are currently compiling a comprehensive fitness report to assess the vehicle's condition and safety compliance at the time of the incident.
Transport Department Intensifies Safety Monitoring
In response to this accident and previous incidents in Kurnool and Chitradurga, the transport department has ramped up its vigilance. Officials are now closely monitoring the functionality of rear emergency exits and the total of three doors on buses. An officer stressed that many bus operators and owners are undertaking conversions of existing vehicles to enhance safety features, with the RTO department overseeing these modifications. State Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy has issued directives to officials to ensure strict adherence to safety protocols, a move prompted by the Kurnool tragedy.
Driver's Condition and Mixed Reactions
Driver Devaraj, who is credited with assisting passengers during the emergency, is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Shivamogga. His well-wishers are lauding him for his heroic efforts in saving lives and have initiated fundraising campaigns to support his recovery from burn injuries. A hospital administrator informed TOI that Devaraj has been shifted off ventilator support, indicating a positive step in his medical journey.
However, not all perspectives align with this praise. A 23-year-old complainant, Nitheesh from Nittur village in Hosanagara, who works as an accountant, has placed blame on the driver for the incident, adding a layer of controversy to the narrative.

Shivamogga SP B Nikhil has taken proactive steps in the wake of the accident. He has issued instructions to bus operators and announced plans to convene a meeting with RTO officials.
