Haryana Police Launches Special Investigation Team for Surajkund Mela Tragedy
In a decisive response to the catastrophic amusement ride failure at the Surajkund International Crafts Mela, the Haryana Police has established a dedicated Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a comprehensive inquiry. This move follows the tragic incident on Saturday evening where a massive 'Tsunami' swing collapsed mid-air, resulting in the death of on-duty police inspector Jagdish Prasad and injuries to multiple individuals.
Composition and Leadership of the Investigation Team
The newly formed SIT will be spearheaded by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Varun Dahiya, who brings significant investigative experience to the forefront. Supporting him in this critical mission are Sub-Inspector Sheeshpal from the Crime Branch, NIT, and Sub-Inspector Sanjay, both appointed as core members of the team. Overseeing the entire investigation process will be Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Mukesh Malhotra, operating under the direct guidance of Haryana Director General of Police Ajay Singhal.
Details of the Fatal Incident and Immediate Aftermath
The disaster unfolded during the 39th edition of the renowned Surajkund Mela when the giant swing, carrying approximately 19 passengers, suddenly tilted and crashed violently to the ground. Inspector Jagdish Prasad, aged 58 and deployed on security duty at the fair, tragically lost his life while courageously attempting to rescue trapped victims from the wreckage. The collapse left twelve additional individuals injured, including both police personnel and civilians who were enjoying the festivities.
Government Response and Compensation Announcements
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini expressed profound sorrow over the incident, describing it as deeply painful during his address to reporters. The state government has pledged full support to the affected families, with immediate measures including financial compensation and employment assistance. Specifically, the family of the deceased inspector will receive comprehensive assistance, with one of his children being offered a government job as part of the relief package.
"The government stands firmly with the family of Inspector Jagdish Prasad. He lost his life while saving others. All possible assistance will be provided, including financial support and a government job for one of his children," affirmed Chief Minister Saini. Additionally, individuals who sustained serious injuries will each receive Rs 1 lakh, while the state will cover all medical treatment costs for those injured in the accident.
Legal Actions and Ongoing Investigations
Police authorities have already initiated legal proceedings by filing a First Information Report (FIR) and arresting Mohammad Shakir, the proprietor of Himachal Fun Care Company that operated the faulty ride, along with his staff member Nitesh. Both individuals face serious charges, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, as investigators meticulously examine potential safety norm violations and criminal negligence.
Concurrently, the district administration has established a separate inquiry committee at the Additional Deputy Commissioner level to scrutinize the technical and mechanical factors contributing to the accident. This parallel investigation aims to provide a detailed analysis of the structural and operational failures that led to the collapse.

As a precautionary measure, the amusement park section of the Surajkund Mela venue has been shut down with immediate effect, although the broader cultural fair continues as scheduled.
