Jharkhand Son Drops Religious Condition to Accept Lost Mother After Administration Intervention

The district administration in Godda, Jharkhand, has successfully mediated a family reunion after Madan Besra, who had refused to accept his long-lost mother unless she converted to Hinduism, agreed to take her back without any preconditions. The son is now set to travel to Kolkata on Thursday to bring his mother, Sushila Murmu, home.

Administration Steps In to Resolve Family Dispute

On Wednesday, Mahavir Pandit, the officer-in-charge at Poriahat Police Station, visited Besra's residence to discuss the matter. "I met him and asked him to accept his mother without any condition. Such incidents are unacceptable to us. He will get on a train to Kolkata on Thursday," Pandit stated during a phone call. The administration's proactive approach aimed to ensure that familial bonds are not broken over religious differences.

Initial Resistance and Religious Condition

Madan Besra, who sells spices at a local wholesale market, was informed about his mother's whereabouts a few days ago when members of the Amateur Radio operators contacted him. "While he was surprised to learn about his mother, he started looking for excuses when we mentioned her return. Initially, he said that he was busy. Later, when we made him talk to his mother, Besra clearly placed the condition of changing her religion," explained Ambarish Nag Biswas of the West Bengal Radio Club. This condition sparked concern among community members and authorities.

Background of Sushila Murmu's Journey

Sushila Murmu had converted to Christianity before her marriage and left her village, Dahupagar, after her husband's death. She was first spotted in Kolkata by a member of the Missionaries of Charity, who took her to a shelter home. Since 2001, Murmu has resided at a south Kolkata home, living a life separated from her family until recent developments brought her story to light.

Community and Local Authorities Ensure Safety

Vikesh Kumar, the mukhiya of the Liladha panchayat, emphasized the importance of family unity and ongoing monitoring. "We told him that he cannot say no to his mother. However, we will keep an eye on him after she returns. We will ensure she does not face any more neglect now," Kumar assured. This statement highlights the community's commitment to protecting Murmu's well-being and preventing future neglect.

The case underscores broader issues of religious tolerance and family responsibilities in rural India, with local authorities playing a crucial role in mediating such sensitive matters. As Besra prepares for his journey to Kolkata, the focus remains on fostering a harmonious reunion and ensuring that Murmu receives the care and respect she deserves in her later years.
