Class 12 Student's Mahindra Thar Rams into Multiple Vehicles in Gandhinagar
In a shocking incident in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, a Class 12 student, barely three months above the legal age to drive a car, lost control of his Mahindra Thar, resulting in a collision with three vehicles. The accident occurred on Wednesday morning in Kalol, leading to injuries, including bone fractures for one individual, as confirmed by local police authorities.
Details of the Accident and Injuries
According to Sub-inspector A N Chaudhary of the jurisdictional police station, the incident took place around 9:30 am near Ambedkar bridge on the service road. The youth, who holds a learner's licence, was driving the Thar to his school for a farewell day event, allegedly to "show off" to his peers. He was accompanied by three friends in the vehicle, all of whom escaped unharmed. However, the crash impacted multiple others:
- A motorcycle rider, identified as Sohaib Ahmed Abdulwahid Shaikh, 38, suffered fractures on his right hand and left leg after being thrown off his bike and run over by the Thar.
- Two men in a loading rickshaw (goods carriage) sustained minor injuries when the Thar rammed into their vehicle, causing both to collapse onto their sides.
All injured parties were promptly transported to a hospital via ambulance. While the two men in the goods carriage received outdoor patient treatment and were discharged, Shaikh required further medical attention and was shifted to Shraddha Hospital by his family.
Police Investigation and Legal Actions
An FIR was registered against the student driver based on a complaint filed by Shaikh. The FIR alleges that the SUV was being driven "very fast on the wrong side", initially hitting another two-wheeler before colliding with Shaikh's motorcycle and subsequently the goods carriage. Police have booked the youth under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rash or negligent driving that endangers human life or safety, as well as under provisions of the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act for dangerous and negligent driving.
Sub-inspector Chaudhary noted that while the driver and his three passengers—aged 26 and just above 18—were uninjured, the incident highlights serious concerns about young drivers and road safety. The case underscores the risks associated with inexperienced driving, particularly in high-traffic areas like Gandhinagar.
