Surajkund Festival Swing Collapse Claims Life of Police Inspector, Injures 13

A devastating accident occurred at the Surajkund International Craft Festival in Faridabad, Haryana, on Saturday evening, February 7, when a swing ride collapsed, resulting in one fatality and 13 injuries. The incident, which was captured on video, has led to immediate police action with two arrests made in connection with the tragedy.

Tragic Scene Unfolds as Swing Structure Fails

According to officials, the swing ride was in operation with approximately 19 people on board when one of its supporting pillars suddenly gave way around 6 PM. Witnesses described a scene of initial excitement turning to horror as the structure tilted and crashed to the ground. The swing had been moving at high speed when the failure occurred, leaving it hanging briefly before the complete collapse.

The video footage shows the ride soaring high before the catastrophic failure, with screams audible as the structure plummeted. This visual evidence has become crucial for the ongoing investigation into the causes of the mechanical failure.

Heroic Police Inspector Loses Life in Rescue Attempt

Among the victims was 58-year-old police inspector Jagdish Prasad, who was on duty at the festival venue. Displaying remarkable bravery, Inspector Prasad noticed the ride tilting and immediately attempted to rescue people before the structure completely gave way. Tragically, he was caught in the collapse and was later declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Inspector Prasad was cremated with full state honors on Sunday in his native Dengar village in Uttar Pradesh. His last rites were performed on the banks of the Yamuna River, where his son Gaurav lit the funeral pyre amidst a gathering of hundreds of mourners, including fellow police personnel who paid their respects with ceremonial salutes.

Police Investigation Leads to Two Arrests

Haryana Police have moved swiftly in response to the incident. Faridabad DCP Maqsood Ahmed confirmed that an FIR was registered immediately following the accident. Two individuals have been arrested so far – identified as contractors and vendors associated with the fair who owned the agency operating the rides.

"After registering the case, we detained and questioned those who we believed could have had a role in the incident," DCP Ahmed stated. "Following the questioning, we have so far made two arrests of those whose involvement was established."

The police official added that several others are being questioned as part of the investigation, and further legal action will be taken if additional roles or involvement come to light during the probe.

Festival Continues with Safety Precautions

Despite the tragic incident, the Faridabad District Administration and Surajkund Fair Authority have announced that the Surajkund International Crafts Festival will continue as scheduled. However, significant safety measures have been implemented in response to the accident.

Officials confirmed that the amusement ride area at the mela has been temporarily closed as a precautionary measure. This closure will remain in effect until the investigation is completed and comprehensive safety checks have been thoroughly reviewed. The decision aims to ensure no further incidents occur while maintaining the cultural and economic significance of the ongoing festival.

The Surajkund International Craft Festival, known for showcasing traditional crafts and cultural performances, now faces scrutiny regarding safety protocols for amusement rides. This incident has raised important questions about ride maintenance, operator training, and regulatory oversight at public festivals across the region.
