Surat Caterer Arrested for Wedding Fraud After Taking Rs 3.06 Lakh Advance
In a shocking incident from Surat, the Dumas police have arrested a local caterer who allegedly accepted a massive 2,500-plate wedding order, collected substantial advance payments from both the bride's and groom's families, and then vanished just days before the ceremony. The arrest follows a frantic last-minute scramble by the families to arrange an alternative caterer, which resulted in additional expenses and dissatisfaction among guests.
The Wedding Order and Advance Payments
According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed with the police, the case revolves around the wedding of Prakash Patel's daughter, scheduled for November 22 at their home in Bhimpore village. Prakash Patel, 57, was referred to a caterer named Paresh Trivedi, who was known in the village. Patel placed an order with Trivedi for 1,500 plates at a rate of Rs 230 per plate.
Simultaneously, the groom's father, Harshad Patel, also based on the same reference, placed a separate order with Trivedi for 1,000 plates at Rs 207 per plate. This brought the total order to 2,500 plates. Both families paid Trivedi a combined advance of Rs 3.06 lakh against the total bill of Rs 5.52 lakh, trusting him to deliver the catering services as promised.
The Disappearance and Last-Minute Crisis
The situation took a dramatic turn when Prakash Patel attempted to contact Trivedi on November 20, just two days before the wedding. Trivedi's phone was switched off, raising immediate alarms. Patel then visited Trivedi's purported residence in Amroli, only to be informed by neighbors that the caterer had moved out eight months prior, leaving no forwarding address.
With the wedding imminent and no sign of Trivedi, Prakash Patel was forced to make emergency arrangements. He secured another caterer at the last moment, but this came at a significant extra cost. Moreover, the guests reportedly did not enjoy the food, as the menu and caterer were hastily arranged, compromising the quality and experience of the wedding feast.
The Investigation and Arrest
After the wedding, Prakash Patel conducted his own inquiries and discovered that Trivedi was actually residing at Shiv Darshan Society in Amroli. Upon visiting this address, Trivedi's wife claimed he was out of town. However, neighbors revealed that Trivedi had a history of improper conduct regarding financial matters, suggesting a pattern of dubious behavior.
Armed with this information, Prakash Patel approached the Dumas police on February 11 and filed a formal complaint. Based on his allegations, an FIR was registered against Paresh Trivedi, leading to his subsequent arrest. The police are now delving deeper into the case to uncover the full extent of Trivedi's activities.
Police Statement and Ongoing Probe
Dumas police inspector N V Bharwad provided insights into the investigation, stating, "We are investigating if he cheated other people and where he spent the money." This statement indicates that the authorities suspect Trivedi may have defrauded additional victims and are working to trace the misappropriated funds. The case highlights the vulnerabilities in informal business dealings and underscores the importance of due diligence, especially for significant events like weddings.
