Surat Police Crack Down on Night Noise for Exams

Surat Police Implements Stringent Noise Control Measures Ahead of Exams

In a decisive move to support students during their critical exam periods, the Surat City Police have announced strict enforcement actions against noise pollution, particularly at night. This initiative comes in response to numerous complaints from residents about disturbances caused by loudspeakers and other sources, which are disrupting study sessions for students preparing for upcoming examinations.

Official Notification and Decibel Limits

City Police Commissioner Anupamsingh Gahlaut has issued a formal notification prohibiting excessive noise, emphasizing that violations are punishable under the law. The police have outlined specific decibel limits to be enforced across different zones:

  • Residential Areas: Maximum of 55 decibels from 6 AM to 10 PM, and 45 decibels at night.
  • Industrial Areas: 75 decibels during the day and 70 decibels at night.
  • Commercial Areas: 65 decibels in the day and 55 decibels at night.
  • Silent Zones: 50 decibels in the day and 40 decibels at night.

These measures aim to create a conducive environment for students, especially during nighttime hours when concentration is paramount.

Targeted Actions Against Common Noise Sources

Deputy Commissioner of Police Panna Momaya highlighted that the police have identified key sources of noise complaints. "It came to our knowledge that in some residential areas, loud noise, particularly from DJ performances at weddings, has been causing significant issues for residents, especially students," she stated. In response, police will take stringent action against wedding processions using loud DJ sound systems on public roads, ensuring they do not disrupt traffic or disturb students during the exam season.

Additionally, the police will monitor and act against vehicles causing noise pollution at night. Special attention will be given to locations with regular heavy vehicle movement, where officers will encourage drivers to avoid using loud horns to minimize disturbances.

Community Reporting and Rapid Response

To enhance enforcement, the police have established a system for citizens to report violations. "Police teams will promptly reach spots where complaints are received. Citizens can call the control room to report any breaches of the sound limits, and we will take swift action," added Deputy Commissioner Momaya. This proactive approach ensures that noise-related issues are addressed quickly, maintaining peace in residential neighborhoods.

Timing with Exam Schedules

The crackdown is strategically timed to coincide with the upcoming exam season. CBSE school annual exams are set to begin by the end of this month, followed shortly by state board exams and college examinations. By implementing these measures now, the police aim to provide a quiet and focused atmosphere for students during this critical academic period, helping them perform to the best of their abilities without unnecessary distractions.
