Surat Teenage Couple Attempts Suicide Over Relationship Fears
In a distressing incident just before Valentine's Day, a teenage couple in Surat allegedly attempted suicide on Friday, driven by fears that they would not be allowed to stay together. Both individuals survived the attempt and are currently receiving medical treatment at SMIMER Hospital, with authorities confirming they are out of danger.
Details of the Incident at Ugat Botanical Garden
The incident unfolded at Ugat Botanical Garden in the Rander area of Surat. The boy, identified as 18-year-old Rohan Nahin, reportedly consumed a poisonous substance and slit his wrist, while the 16-year-old girl also slit her wrist. Passers-by discovered the couple bleeding in the garden and immediately alerted the police, who rushed them to SMIMER Hospital via ambulance.
Background and Family Opposition
Preliminary police investigations have revealed that the girl left her home on Thursday, informing her family she was going to study at a friend's place. When she did not return, her family filed a missing person complaint. According to her family, the girl met Rohan a few months ago through a mutual friend. She is a Class XI student, whereas Rohan is neither studying nor employed and reportedly has ongoing disputes with his own family.
Upon learning about the relationship, the girl's family allegedly urged her to end it due to concerns over Rohan's background, but she refused. This family opposition is believed to have contributed to the couple's desperate actions.
Police Investigation and Allegations
Police are actively probing where the girl stayed after leaving home and how she spent her time during her absence. While the family has ruled out any sexual assault, they have alleged that Rohan kidnapped the girl. Statements from both teenagers and their family members have been recorded by the authorities.
Further action, including the possible registration of a formal case, will be determined based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
Separate Incident: Labourer Couple Attempts Suicide
In an unrelated but similarly tragic event, a labourer couple allegedly consumed phenyl following a quarrel over work and money in Varachha on Saturday. Identified as Ravi Devipujak (30) and his wife Shital (25), who live under a flyover bridge in the area, both are undergoing treatment at SMIMER Hospital and are reported to be in stable condition. Police have recorded their statements as part of the investigation into this separate case.
