Suriname Mass Stabbing: Suspect Dies by Suicide in Custody After Killing 9
Suriname stabbing suspect dies in custody after killing 9

A 43-year-old man, suspected of carrying out a horrific knife attack that left nine people dead, including five children, has died by suicide while in police custody in Suriname. The incident has plunged the small South American nation into a state of profound shock and mourning.

The Deadly Attack and Arrest

According to authorities, the violent episode unfolded on Sunday in the Richelieu area of the Commewijne district, located approximately 25 kilometers east of the capital, Paramaribo. The suspect, identified only by the initials D A, allegedly attacked his own children with a knife following a heated phone argument with his estranged wife.

The violence did not stop there. Police reports indicate the man then turned on his neighbours, forcing his way into their homes. When officers arrived at the scene, the suspect attempted to attack them as well and was injured during the process of his arrest.

In addition to the nine fatalities, a sixth child and another adult sustained serious injuries. They are currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Paramaribo.

Suspect Found Dead in Police Cell

In a tragic turn of events, the suspect was found dead in his cell on Monday. A police statement cited by AFP confirmed that the 43-year-old man died by suicide, having been found hanged. He was being held at a police station following his arrest for the mass stabbing.

This development has added another layer of tragedy to an already devastating event, closing the door on a formal judicial process for the victims' families.

National Grief and a Shift in Security Trends

The killings have sent shockwaves across Suriname, a former Dutch colony with a population of around 600,000. The nation has historically been known for one of the lowest murder rates in the region, making this incident particularly jarring.

Surinamese President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons expressed the nation's collective sorrow in a Facebook post. She stated that the attacker had taken the lives of his children and neighbours, and offered her condolences: “I wish all the bereaved much strength, resilience, and comfort in this unimaginably difficult time.”

However, data suggests a worrying trend. According to the think tank InSight Crime, Suriname's homicide rate had already shifted in 2024, rising to 30 homicides per 100,000 people. This tragic event underscores a significant departure from the country's long-standing record of low violent crime.

The community of Richelieu and the entire nation are now left to grapple with the aftermath of an act of violence that has shattered numerous families and challenged the country's sense of security.
