Transgender Community Stages Protest in Bhubaneswar Demanding Justice for Murdered Member

In a powerful display of solidarity and demand for justice, members of the transgender community organized a demonstration at Airport Square in Bhubaneswar on Monday. The protest was triggered by the brutal murder of one of their community members in Pipili, Puri district, which occurred on Sunday night.

Details of the Tragic Incident

The victim, a 25-year-old yoga teacher who resided in Bhubaneswar, was found with severe stab injuries near Uttara Chowk on the Puri-Bhubaneswar National Highway 316. Her blood-soaked body was discovered under circumstances that remain unclear, and she was declared dead upon arrival at Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar.

Police authorities are currently investigating the case from multiple angles, examining CCTV footage and phone call records to uncover the motive and identity of the perpetrator(s). Soumyendu Tripathy, inspector in-charge of Pipili police station, assured that the case would be solved soon, but the community remains skeptical and demands more rigorous investigation.

Community Demands and Suspicions

Meghna Sahoo, secretary of the All Odisha Transgender Association, articulated the community's demands during the protest. "We demand a crime branch probe into her death. The government should also provide her family with Rs 10 lakh compensation," Sahoo stated, emphasizing the need for a thorough and impartial investigation.

The association revealed that the deceased was a recent entrant to their community, having joined only two or three days prior to her murder. "She was a new entrant to our community and did not yet undergo the formal induction rituals. Her induction was pending," Sahoo explained, highlighting the vulnerability of newcomers.

Social Stigma and Community Support

In a poignant statement, Sahoo shared that the victim's family had disowned her due to social stigma. "We learned that her family disowned her due to social stigma. But we did not abandon her. We are her family now, and we will pursue the case until those responsible are arrested," she affirmed, showcasing the community's unwavering support.

The transgender community suspects that the murder might be linked to drug addicts or drunkards, as the victim was standing near the highway in the evening. "She stood near the highway in the evening. She might have been attacked by drunkards or addicts," Sahoo speculated, while also acknowledging rumors of involvement from within the community.

Call for Stringent Action

Sahoo made it clear that if any member of the transgender community was found to be involved in the crime, strict action must be taken. "There are talks that she was attacked by a rival group of transgender persons. If that is true, they must face stringent punishment," she insisted, underscoring the importance of accountability regardless of the perpetrators' identities.

The association has vowed to continue their fight for justice, ensuring that the case does not go unresolved. This incident has sparked broader conversations about safety, discrimination, and the need for better protection for marginalized communities in Odisha.
