Third Fire Incident in a Week at Trichy Railway Land Raises Alarm
A piece of railway land located at G Corner on the Trichy-Chennai National Highway in Trichy witnessed its third minor fire incident within a single week on Wednesday. This recurring issue has left fire service department personnel deeply concerned and frustrated over what they describe as unsafe waste management practices by Southern Railway.
Details of the Latest Fire Incident
According to personnel from the Cantonment fire service, a minor fire erupted near the G Corner railway ground, which is situated close to the Ponmalai railway station, around 1 PM on Wednesday. Upon receiving the alert, a team led by Assistant District Fire Officer Leo Joseph was immediately dispatched to the scene. The firefighters engaged in intense efforts, utilizing approximately 12,000 litres of water over a two-hour period before successfully containing the blaze.
Recurring Problem and Its Impact
A firefighter on the scene expressed significant frustration, stating, "This was the third time we extinguished a fire at the exact same spot in just one week. The root cause appears to be the open dumping of discarded materials from rail coaches, such as paint, sheets, clothes, and foam, which are highly flammable. While resalable waste is handled appropriately, these hazardous leftovers are often left unattended and prone to ignition." The official further highlighted the broader dangers, noting that the unhealthy smoke produced during these fires severely affects visibility for commuters traveling on the adjacent national highway, posing a serious safety risk.
Strain on Emergency Resources
The fire department has been forced to allocate substantial resources to address these repeated incidents. On each occasion, they must deploy a fire tender and utilize at least 10,000 litres of water to combat the flames. This allocation of manpower and equipment creates significant operational challenges, as it hampers the department's ability to respond promptly to other distress calls received simultaneously from different parts of the city.
Blame and Response from Authorities
Fire officials have squarely placed the blame on Southern Railway for what they term "improper" waste disposal at the site. In response, a railway official acknowledged the issue, stating, "Stakeholders have been instructed to maintain cleanliness of the property and to avoid dumping discards near the National Highway. We are committed to improving our waste management protocols to prevent such incidents in the future." However, the repeated nature of the fires suggests that current measures may be insufficient, calling for more stringent enforcement and oversight.
