Amit Chakraborty, alias Noni, a functionary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) who is allegedly close to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) councillor and MMiC Debraj Chakraborty, was arrested late on Tuesday in connection with an extortion and assault case involving a real estate promoter. Debraj Chakraborty is the husband of former MLA Aditi Munshi.
Earlier, TMC councillor of Ward 9 Samaresh Chakraborty had been arrested in the same case. According to police, in December 2025, Amit and Samaresh allegedly demanded Rs 50 lakh from promoter Kishore Haldar in Raghunathpur under Baguiati Police Station. Haldar reportedly paid Rs 3 lakh, and when he refused to pay the remaining amount, he was allegedly assaulted with gun butts and iron rods. Haldar subsequently lodged a complaint at Baguiati Police Station.
Police further stated that Haldar later alleged that on May 4, five to six men threatened him with dire consequences and made an attempt on his life. A district court on Wednesday remanded Amit to 10 days of police custody.
