In a shocking incident from Odisha's Ganjam district, a senior citizen and his two adult sons were taken into custody for allegedly launching a violent attack on a police patrol team. The arrests took place on Wednesday, following the Monday night altercation that left a police constable injured.
Confrontation During Patrol Escalates
The trouble began on Monday night when a police team from Bhanjanagar police station was on its regular patrol duty. The officers came across a group of individuals consuming alcohol in front of a fast food shop located at Jamapalli, near Bhanjanagar. The shop is owned by the accused trio.
Inspector Jeebananand Jena, in-charge of Bhanjanagar police station, stated that the police team grew suspicious of illegal liquor sales from the premises. When the officers attempted to search the shop, the three men—the 65-year-old owner and his sons—reportedly began abusing them verbally.
Violent Attack with a Knife
The verbal abuse quickly turned into a physical assault. According to Inspector Jena, the trio did not stop at pushing and shoving. One of the accused allegedly attempted to slit the neck of a police constable using a knife. During the ensuing struggle, the constable, identified as Sagar Pradhan, sustained injuries to his right hand.
Faced with a dangerous and volatile situation, the outnumbered police team called for immediate backup. Additional police forces rushed to the spot at Jamapalli and managed to rescue the initial team from the attackers.
Previous Warnings and Aftermath
Inspector Jena revealed that this was not the first time the shop owners had come under police scrutiny. Authorities had previously warned the trio against allowing people to drink alcohol in front of their shop, indicating ongoing concerns about the establishment's activities.
Following the attack, Constable Sagar Pradhan was provided immediate medical attention. He was taken to the sub-divisional hospital in Bhanjanagar for treatment of his hand injuries. The police have now registered a case against the father and his sons, who remain in custody as the investigation into the full extent of the assault continues.
