Tripura Man Apprehended with Gold Bars Worth Over Rs 85 Lakh at Badarpur Railway Station
In a significant development, a 32-year-old man from Tripura was arrested at Sribhumi's Badarpur railway station on Sunday after authorities recovered five gold bars weighing a total of 585 grams from his possession. The arrest was made by the Government Railway Police (GRP) during a routine checking operation conducted aboard the Agartala–Deoghar Weekly Express.
Suspicious Behavior Leads to Discovery
According to official GRP sources, on-duty personnel noticed the passenger behaving in a suspicious manner while aboard the train. When questioned, the man allegedly failed to provide satisfactory answers regarding his activities and travel details, which prompted the officials to conduct a thorough search of his luggage.
During the search, the GRP team discovered five specially packed gold bars concealed within the man's belongings. The recovered gold bars have a total weight of 585 grams and are estimated to be valued at over Rs 85 lakh in the current market.
Investigation into Foreign Origin
Authorities have raised suspicions that the gold may be of foreign origin, indicating potential involvement in smuggling activities. The accused, identified as a resident of Ranirbazar near Agartala in Tripura, has been taken into custody for further investigation. The GRP is now working to determine the source of the gold, its intended destination, and whether the individual was acting alone or as part of a larger smuggling network.
The arrest highlights the ongoing vigilance of railway police in combating illegal activities along major transit routes.
