Truck Driver Allegedly Assaults Family with Iron Rod Following Highway Collision
In a disturbing incident on the Delhi-Jaipur highway, a truck driver allegedly attacked a Ghaziabad family traveling in their car with an iron rod after a collision near Gurgaon. The episode unfolded on Sunday when the family was returning home after visiting Salasar Balaji.
Details of the Highway Altercation
According to a complaint filed by Varun Garg at the Bilaspur police station, the confrontation occurred near the Sidhrawali flyover. Garg stated that as his Kia Carens crossed the flyover, a truck bearing registration number RJ09GC5177 approached at high speed and struck the driver-side window of his vehicle.
When Garg signaled the truck driver to stop, the driver attempted to flee the scene. However, Garg managed to intercept the truck a short distance away. What followed was an alarming escalation of violence.
Violent Outburst and Police Response
The truck driver allegedly stepped out of his vehicle, retrieved an iron rod, and proceeded to strike the car's bonnet and windscreen. Police reports indicate that when Garg objected to this damage, the driver attempted to attack him directly with the rod.
Fortunately, Garg's driver, Deepak Chaudhary, intervened and prevented the physical assault. Despite this intervention, the accused reportedly pushed Chaudhary, hurled abuses, and issued threats before fleeing the spot in his truck.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
An FIR has been registered at Bilaspur police station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including:
- Section 281: Rash driving or riding on a public way
- Section 125: Endangering human life or personal safety of others
- Section 324(4): Mischief causing damage
- Section 115(2): Voluntarily causing hurt
- Section 351(3): Criminal intimidation
Remarkably, no injuries were reported from the incident despite the violent nature of the confrontation. The case highlights growing concerns about road safety and driver behavior on India's busy national highways.
Broader Implications for Highway Safety
This incident underscores several critical issues facing Indian roadways:
- The need for enhanced monitoring and enforcement on highways
- Psychological factors contributing to road rage incidents
- Importance of bystander intervention in preventing violence
- Legal mechanisms available under the new BNS for such offenses
The Bilaspur police continue their investigation into the matter, seeking to apprehend the accused truck driver and bring him to justice. The case serves as a stark reminder of how minor traffic incidents can escalate into serious criminal matters when tempers flare on India's congested road networks.
