Two Arrested in Connection with Fatal Swing Collapse at Surajkund Mela
In a tragic incident at the 39th Surajkund International Crafts Mela in Faridabad, a giant swing collapsed, resulting in the death of an on-duty police officer and injuries to 12 others. The Faridabad Police have taken swift action, arresting two individuals linked to the amusement ride operator.
Arrests Made and Charges Filed
On Sunday, the police apprehended Mohammad Shakir, the proprietor of Himachal Fun Care Company, which was responsible for installing the swings at the fair. He has been booked under charges including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, along with other relevant legal provisions. Additionally, Nitesh, a resident of Dharmapuri Sadar in Meerut Cantt, was also arrested. Authorities have indicated that the roles of other vendors and associates are currently under investigation.
An FIR has been registered at the Surajkund Police Station, and a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted. This team is operating under the supervision of a Deputy Commissioner of Police rank officer, with the inquiry being conducted on scientific and technical grounds to ensure a thorough investigation.
Details of the Incident and Victim
The collapse occurred on Saturday when the swing snapped mid-air and crashed to the ground. Inspector Jagdish Prasad, aged 59, suffered fatal injuries during the rescue operation. Despite being positioned on the opposite side of the swing, a heavy part of the structure crushed him as he attempted to assist others. His colleagues have since recalled his dedication and bravery in the line of duty.
Government Response and Safety Measures
In response to the incident, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has directed officials to enforce strict compliance with safety norms at melas and other public events. He has ordered a comprehensive review and report on the technical inspection, fitness certification, and operational arrangements of all swings and equipment to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The Chief Minister also announced compensation for the victims, including a government job for one family member of the deceased Inspector Prasad and financial assistance of one lakh rupees for each of the injured individuals. This move aims to provide financial security and support to those affected by the accident.
Current Status of the Mela
Despite the tragic event, the 39th Surajkund International Crafts Mela is continuing as scheduled, as confirmed by the district administration and Mela Authority in a statement on Sunday morning. However, as a precautionary measure, the amusement ride area has been temporarily closed, and families have been turned away from this section. The closure underscores the ongoing safety concerns and the need for rigorous inspections before any rides resume operation.
Faridabad Police Commissioner Satendra Kumar Gupta had previously constituted the SIT late Saturday night, emphasizing the urgency of the investigation. The team, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Mukesh Kumar, is tasked with uncovering the causes behind the swing failure and ensuring accountability.
This incident highlights critical issues regarding safety protocols at public events and the importance of regular maintenance and certification of amusement rides. As the investigation progresses, authorities are focused on implementing measures to safeguard attendees and prevent similar occurrences.
