Tragic Drowning Incident Claims Lives of Two Brothers in Pune's Gunjavani Dam
A heartbreaking incident unfolded on Sunday in the serene backwaters of the Gunjavani dam, located in Ghevhande village within Rajgad taluka, approximately 46 kilometers from Pune city. Two siblings, identified as Damaji Gaikwad, aged 50, and his elder brother Dattu Gaikwad, aged 55, both residents of Ghevhande village, tragically lost their lives in a drowning accident.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Tragedy
According to police reports, the unfortunate chain of events began when Dattu Gaikwad was attempting to place a water pump into the water. In a sudden and devastating turn, he lost his balance and began to drown. Witnessing his elder brother in distress, Damaji Gaikwad immediately jumped into the water in a brave attempt to rescue him. However, both brothers were unable to survive the ordeal and drowned in the dam's backwaters.
Assistant Inspector Kishore Shevate, who is in charge of the Velhe police station, provided detailed insights into the incident. "The incident occurred when Dattu lost his balance while placing a water pump into the water and began to drown. His younger brother, Damaji, jumped in to rescue him, but both drowned," Shevate stated, highlighting the tragic nature of the event.

The Gaikwad brothers were known in their community as hardworking farmers, deeply connected to their agricultural roots in Ghevhande village. Adding to the community's grief, Damaji Gaikwad was a former sarpanch of the village, a respected figure who had served the local population in a leadership capacity. His passing, along with that of his brother, has left a significant void in the village.
Search and Rescue Operations
Upon receiving information about the drowning, disaster management teams from Rajgad and Haveli swiftly reached the spot and initiated intensive search operations. The teams worked diligently, managing to locate and pull Damaji Gaikwad out of the water. Unfortunately, medical professionals declared him dead at the scene.
The search for Dattu Gaikwad continued late into the night but proved unsuccessful initially. "The teams searched for his elder brother until late at night, but without success. We resumed the search operation on Monday morning and recovered Dattu's body," Assistant Inspector Shevate explained, detailing the extended efforts to recover both victims.
Legal Proceedings and Investigation
In response to the incident, the Velhe police station has registered a case of accidental death. Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to examine all angles and ensure a comprehensive understanding of the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. "We have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the matter from all angles," Shevate confirmed, emphasizing the procedural steps being taken.
