Greater Noida Hostel Tragedy: Two More Wardens Arrested in Student Suicide Case
In a significant development in the tragic case of a student's alleged suicide at a private hostel in Greater Noida, police have arrested two more individuals, bringing the total number of arrests to four. The latest arrests involve wardens from the hostel where the incident occurred, deepening the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the young student's death.
Details of the Incident and Arrests
The 20-year-old second-year BTech student died on the intervening night of January 23 and 24 at a hostel located in Knowledge Park-3, Greater Noida. According to police officials, the two newly arrested accused are wardens at the hostel where the tragic incident took place. This follows the arrest of two other individuals associated with the hostel administration on Sunday, indicating a broadening scope of the police probe.
An FIR has been registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Knowledge Park police station, including sections related to unlawful assembly, voluntarily causing hurt, and abetment of suicide. The complaint was filed by the student's family, who are seeking justice for their loss.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Tragedy
Police investigation reveals that the student had returned to the hostel late at night with two friends and was allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Hostel authorities reportedly reprimanded him for violating hostel rules and recorded a video of the incident. This video was subsequently sent to his father, setting off a chain of events that culminated in the tragedy.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Greater Noida) Sudhir Kumar stated, "When the student entered the hostel, the hostel warden and guards started scolding him." Following this, the father received the video and allegedly scolded his son over the phone, informing him that he would be called back home.
An officer involved in the case explained, "After receiving the video, the father allegedly scolded him over phone and told him that he would be called back home." The officer added that the student "appeared distressed after the call and subsequently jumped from the fourth floor of the hostel building."
Aftermath and Investigation Status
The student was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared him dead upon arrival. The police are continuing their investigation to determine the exact role of each arrested individual and whether there were any lapses in hostel management that contributed to the incident.
This case has highlighted concerns about hostel administration practices and student mental health in educational institutions. The arrests of four individuals connected to the hostel administration suggest that authorities are taking the matter seriously and examining all aspects of the tragedy.
The police have assured that the investigation is ongoing and more details may emerge as they gather additional evidence and statements from witnesses. The community in Greater Noida remains shaken by this incident, with calls for better support systems for students living away from home.
