Uttar Pradesh STF Nabs Accused in Major Codeine-Based Drug Trafficking Operation

In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) arrested an accused from Varanasi on Saturday for allegedly stockpiling and trafficking Phensedyl cough syrup and other codeine-containing medicines for illicit purposes. The arrest marks a critical step in combating the illegal drug trade in the region.

Arrest Details and Intelligence Inputs

The accused, identified as Amit Kumar Yadav, was apprehended near Kashi Dham around 3:30 pm. According to ASP STF Vinod Singh, intelligence inputs had indicated that large quantities of Phensedyl cough syrup and other codeine-based medicines were being illegally stored and supplied across multiple states, including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, and West Bengal. The operation also uncovered evidence of smuggling activities extending into Bangladesh, highlighting the transnational nature of the trafficking network.

Interrogation Revelations and Illegal Market Diversion

During interrogation, Amit Kumar Yadav allegedly confessed to procuring nearly one lakh bottles of codeine-based Phensedyl cough syrup through his firm. He diverted these medicines into the illegal market, where they were sold at inflated rates to traffickers for use as intoxicants. This diversion of pharmaceutical products for narcotic purposes poses serious public health and safety risks, as codeine misuse can lead to addiction and other harmful effects.

The STF's swift action underscores ongoing efforts to dismantle drug trafficking rings that exploit legal medications for illegal gains. Authorities are continuing their investigation to identify other individuals involved in this widespread network and to prevent further distribution of such contraband.
