Teenager Allegedly Kills Neighbour in Self-Defence in Banda
In a tragic incident on New Year's Day, an 18-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh's Banda district was forced to take a fatal step in self-preservation. The teenager allegedly killed her 45-year-old neighbour, a farmer, after he attempted to sexually assault her while she was alone at home. The local police have stated that preliminary evidence strongly suggests the act was one of self-defence.
Chronology of a Harrowing Ordeal
The incident unfolded on Thursday afternoon in the Shakarpur area. According to the police inquiry, the accused farmer, who was known to the family, frequently visited the girl's house to meet her mother. On the day of the incident, he arrived at the house on the pretext of some work. The girl's mother had gone to the fields, leaving her daughter alone.
Police reports indicate the man was heavily intoxicated. He allegedly shut the door and tried to sexually assault the 18-year-old. In a state of panic, the girl first attempted to flee but was unsuccessful. Fighting for her safety, she then grabbed an axe and struck the man multiple times. After he fell unconscious, she also hit him with a stick.
Police Action and Legal Proceedings
Following the altercation, the traumatised teenager went to a nearby police outpost and surrendered herself. Acting on her information, the Shakarpur police rushed to the spot, recovered the body, and initiated legal proceedings. The body was taken into custody for post-mortem and further investigation.
Superintendent of Police, Banda, Palash Agarwal, addressed the media, confirming that evidence collected so far supports the girl's claim of self-defence. "We will place all available evidence before the court, which will take a decision in the matter," Agarwal stated. However, based on a complaint filed by the deceased man's wife, the police have registered a murder case against the girl and arrested her.
Officers confirmed she would be produced in court on Friday. Crucially, the prosecution will inform the court that the teenager attacked the man while trying to protect herself from an alleged sexual assault attempt.
Background of the Accused Teenager
Investigations revealed that the girl lives with her mother, her father having passed away a few years ago. She had discontinued her studies after completing her intermediate education. The case has thrown a spotlight on the vulnerabilities faced by women, especially in situations where they are alone and targeted by known individuals.
The police have apprehended the minor boys mentioned in the initial report for further questioning as part of the ongoing investigation. The case remains under active investigation as authorities work to piece together the complete sequence of events.
