Uttarakhand Police Enhance Security Measures in Kotdwar Amid Escalating Political Dispute
In response to mounting communal tensions in Kotdwar, Uttarakhand police have significantly stepped up security across the town. This move follows an incident where Deepak Kumar, a local gym owner, intervened to protect a 70-year-old Muslim shopkeeper from harassment. The situation has now evolved into a heated political confrontation between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress, with both parties trading accusations over the handling of the matter.
Police Deploy Additional Forces and Increase Vigilance
The Pauri Garhwal Police issued a statement emphasizing their commitment to maintaining peace and law and order in the Kotdwar municipal area. They have implemented continuous and effective vigilance measures, including regular patrols and intensive checking drives. Police teams are thoroughly examining vehicles, suspicious individuals, and activities to identify and address any potential disruptions promptly.
On Tuesday, as Deepak Kumar celebrated his birthday, police provided enhanced security at his gym and assigned personal security officials to ensure his safety. Kotdwar police station house officer Pradeeep Negi noted that they have restricted entry for social media influencers to prevent any untoward situations. The police administration is also working to minimize inconvenience for citizens while strengthening a harmonious atmosphere through public cooperation.
Background of the 'Mohammad Deepak' Incident
The controversy began on January 26 when Deepak Kumar, 37, confronted a group of men who were harassing a 70-year-old Muslim shopkeeper suffering from Parkinson's disease. The mob demanded that the shopkeeper remove the word "Baba" from his shop's name. In a viral video of the confrontation, Kumar identified himself as "Mohammad Deepak," a gesture that garnered widespread attention but also led to backlash.
Subsequently, members of the Bajrang Dal gathered to confront Kumar, but police intervention prevented escalation. Three First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed: one by the harassed shopkeeper, Vakeel Ahmed; one by a Kotdwar resident against Deepak Kumar and his friend Vijay Rawat; and one by police against unknown persons from Bajrang Dal.
Political Fallout and Accusations
The incident has sparked a bitter political clash between the BJP and Congress. BJP state president Mahendra Bhatt criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's comments on the matter, calling them an attempt to disturb the peaceful atmosphere of "Devbhoomi" (Uttarakhand). Bhatt expressed concern over whether the incident was pre-planned and accused local Congress leaders of escalating the issue unnecessarily.
In response, the Congress party questioned why cases were registered against Deepak Kumar and Vijay Rawat instead of taking action against the anti-social elements who protested. Suryakant Dhasmana, senior vice-president of the state Congress, alleged that such incidents occur under the patronage of the BJP government to promote communal polarization. He referenced other recent incidents, including the murder of Tripura student Anjel Chakma and the assault on Kashmiri shawl seller Tabish Ahmed, to support his claims.
Deepak Kumar's Stance and Community Impact
Speaking to The Indian Express, Deepak Kumar remained resolute, stating that standing up for the shopkeeper was "the right thing to do" and a humane act. He emphasized that he is accountable only to God and is not fazed by the protests. Kumar reported that things were gradually returning to normal in Kotdwar on Tuesday, thanks in part to the increased police presence.
The police have amplified surveillance at key and sensitive locations in the city to prevent further unrest. This proactive approach aims to ensure that citizens can go about their daily lives without disruption while fostering a cooperative environment for peace.
