Vijayawada POCSO Court Delivers Justice in Minor Kidnapping Case
A special court designated for Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) cases in Vijayawada has handed down a significant verdict, sentencing a man to three years of rigorous imprisonment for the kidnapping of a minor girl. The court, presided over by Judge Justice Velpula Bhavani, also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on the convicted individual, Battula Vishnu Vardhan, a resident of Machavaram village in Kanigiri mandal, Prakasam district.
Details of the Case and Investigation
The case originated from a complaint filed by the father of a 15-year-old girl from the Ferry Road area under Ibrahimpatnam police station limits. According to police reports, the minor left her home on the morning of February 6, 2021, informing her family she was heading to school but never returned. Concerned for her safety, the father lodged a formal complaint with the Ibrahimpatnam police on February 10, 2021.
Subsequently, the then Sub-Inspector G Ramesh registered a missing person case and initiated an investigation. During the probe, authorities uncovered that the accused, Battula Vishnu Vardhan alias Vishnu, aged 20 at the time, had been in regular phone contact with the minor for several days prior to the incident.
Deceptive Tactics and Legal Charges
Police investigations revealed that Vishnu Vardhan allegedly misled the minor girl by falsely claiming that their relationship had been discovered by her family and that they would be forcibly separated. Exploiting this fabricated scenario, he persuaded her to accompany him to Visakhapatnam, where he reportedly behaved inappropriately with her.
As a result of these findings, the case was escalated and altered to include charges under Section 363 of the Indian Penal Code for kidnapping and Section 12 of the POCSO Act, which pertains to sexual harassment of a child. The court's verdict, delivered on Friday, underscores the legal system's commitment to protecting minors from such predatory actions.
Implications and Broader Context
This ruling highlights the judiciary's firm stance against crimes targeting children, particularly in cases involving deception and exploitation. The rigorous imprisonment term and financial penalty serve as a deterrent, emphasizing the serious consequences of violating child protection laws.
The case also sheds light on the investigative efforts of the Ibrahimpatnam police, who diligently pursued the matter to ensure justice was served. It underscores the importance of prompt reporting and thorough police work in addressing such sensitive issues within the community.
